Ohioans urged to be careful with and/or avoid private fireworks shows

Posted on July 3rd, 2013 No Comments

State and safety organizations have been adamant about advocating citizens to practice fireworks safety for this year’s Independence Day celebration in Ohio after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s released data on fireworks-related injuries in 2012.

Organizations, such as Prevent Blindness Ohio, the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of State Fire Marshal, Child Injury Prevention Alliance, and the Ohio Eye Care Coalition, are encouraging Ohioans to steer away from using fireworks to prevent the risk of incurring injuries, especially to children, and to lessen the chances of breaking the state’s law on fireworks.

The annual fireworks report showed 8,700 people were treated for fireworks-related injuries last year, with 5,200 of those happening during the one-month period surrounding last year’s Fourth of July celebration.

Fire Chief J.P. Schulz said sparklers sustain their warmth even after burning out and encouraged the use of a bucket to dispose of the explosives.
