The Ohio Attorney General announced on Wednesday, August 7 that 44-year-old Mason doctor Abubakar Durrani was charged with 10 counts of unnecessarily performing spinal surgeries on patients and billing private and public health insurance companies for millions of dollars of fraudulent services.
According to the indictment served by a federal grand jury, Durrani’s fraudulent surgeries resulted in 300 patients suffering serious complications and incurring life-threatening injuries.
Patient Stephanie Herrin-Threm gave witness testimony to Durrani’s fake medical procedures. She said Durrani told her she would die if she didn’t allow her spine to be fused together – the first cervical vertebrae linked to the second via titanium rods and screws – an operation which another doctor called “less than ideal.”
